Let me share a little of my journey so far...

When my older daughter was in year 2 it was evident that she struggled with Maths. We had no clue on how to assist her other than resort to the methods my teachers had used when teaching me. Instead of being a positive, enjoyable, collaborative experience, homework was something we ‘had to do’ and a source of anxiety for us both.  Emotions would run high, homework was a chore and this was clearly reflected by her Maths grades.

I wanted to find a solution but I didn't know what.  Not surprisingly, we began to focus on things that she did do well such as reading and writing and avoided Maths.

Her well meaning teachers assured me that she would improve as she progressed through primary school but this proved not to be the case.

It felt terrible because I could see her confidence in Maths decline. She would avoid doing any Maths tasks at all costs.  I hated making her do Maths homework as it was emotionally exhausting.

The minutes, hours and days went by while my heart sank.  I had done all that I thought I could, before I nearly resigned to the fact that, “my child just can’t do maths”.

Finally, I took a major step; I decided to switch careers and become a teacher.

Having a child that struggled in Maths, I could empathise with my pupils and crafted my skills to teach children in a way that supported and extended their learning.

In the process I’ve developed a unique 5 Step Method of approaching and teaching Maths which has not only transformed and improved my pupils’ learning but made teaching affirming, positive and enjoyable.

As a teacher with 15 years of experience, I ‘ve been lucky to impact students’ learning and change their perception of Maths in their primary years.

Despite my fear of teaching Math when I started, I realised the positive change working with my daughter had. When my daughter went to senior school and no longer needed my support, I started  sharing my expertise with the wider community.

My background in Child Development was key in turning what I knew into a Course for other parents to teach their children Maths at home.  

Today, I am so happy that I didn’t resign to fate . . . and that I believed in what was possible . . .

Because without the change in approach to her learning and what we did at home, the success we found wouldn't have been possible…

She would have missed the grades she needed to get her subjects of choice and continued to doubt herself as a learner.
